Iowa Gambling Task

Congratulations on your commitment to understanding your mental health! The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a psychological assessment used to measure decision-making skills, particularly under conditions of risk and reward. This task examines how individuals weigh potential short-term gains against long-term consequences by requiring them to select from various decks of cards that carry different rewards and penalties. The task simulates real-life decision-making, revealing tendencies toward risky or advantageous choices. Results are shown on a numerical scale, where higher scores typically indicate a greater tendency toward risk-averse, strategic choices.

To analyze performance on the IGT, scores are based on the balance of advantageous (long-term beneficial) vs. disadvantageous (short-term beneficial but ultimately costly) choices. A computer-based testing platform is typically used to measure outcomes automatically, recording factors like net scores from advantageous and disadvantageous decks, reaction times, and patterns in choice behavior.
